Downie-Deciding to do it and finding a way

No one is going to ask you to be a singer, a songwriter, a music producer or a musician.
You must decide to do it and find a way.
People often ask me “Downie, how long have you sung?” And I always answer “I came out of the womb hitting a high C”. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t sing.”
But I didn’t know until later that I was also a song writer, music producer and instrumentalist.
The skill of music producer and instrumentalist are the most recent hats I have undertaken. “Necessity breeds invention.”
Labels aren’t out there throwing hoards of cash to bring artists along any longer. So you have to get good at the things you can do for yourself.
Labels are not throwing money out there at “unkowns” to bring artists along. Everyone in the music business is scrambling now and plenty of people will take your money without delivering.
This means you must bring yourself along? And while others are out partying, dating and socializing you will be in your studio writing a new song, learning your instrument, producing and mixing a new track. I have walked into radio stations and seen the boxes of CD’s that will never make it on air. You will be up against the top recording artists out there. This is your competition. A dream in itself will not get you anywhere. It will take all the energy and focus you can
muster.

No one will do it for you if you don’t do it for yourself.

Happy New Year!

IN REMEMBRANCE OF JEFF TOURETTE

I was getting ready to post a Christmas blog when the unthinkable happened. It was Sunday morning at 3 am and I couldn't sleep. As I do so often when this happens, I opened up Facebook on my iPhone. I was immediately struck by some tragic news. Jeff Tourette had passed away. It affected me right away in disbelief and thought that it can't be true. I immediately scrolled down and realized that it was true. Thoughts racing through my mind of how could this happen. Jeff was one of those people that everyone who knew him, wanted to know more and get into his world. He had an impact on people. I will be honest, I didn't know Jeff really well, but I think this is the point I would like to make. I didn't need to know him well to know he was special! Even if you were someone that just met him, you knew that you wanted him in your circle. Now, a little history of Jeff and I. He lived just up the road from me growing up in Coquitlam B.C. 7 or 8 houses away. I was friends with his sister and he was older than me by a little bit. He was a protector! One of those people that gave you the impression that he would protect you at school if someone was after you. He made people feel safe! He was also pretty cool and well liked, so if you were his friend, you were IN.
Jump forward to a few years back. Jeff was the Facebook GOD! We connected again a few years back through Facebook and I enjoyed his posts more than any other! I couldn't always share them, being a good Baptist boy lol, but I was laughing all the way still. The posts were always funny and smart. He was good to me and really had a great heart. I don't know too much about his personal life, but I do know he experienced love, which is awesome! The problem with love, for people who really FEEL it, is that it can become "the meaning of life". I related to Jeff in this way as well, as he would often post things to Facebook and wear his heart on his sleeve. Recently I noticed that there was trouble on the home front and also that his posts were sad. I made a comment to look to your friends and music as that is truly what helps in those times. It was all I could do, being in Vancouver and after all, I didn't really have any insight but wanted to offer some encouragement, because I really related to the loss of someone close, especially when it is your best friend, it leaves a hole that is unfillable. Again, those who were close to him will know more, but I feel that my Christmas blog this year needs to be different. People are hurting everywhere and instead of Christmas being about gifts and busy stores, new cars and expensive dinners, I want to focus myself on saying thank you to Jeff for the laughs, his personality and the honesty. I like to think of Jeff as very typical for artists everywhere. The music was a big part of his life!  I believe Jeff was in some great bands, starting here in the west coast! I was reflecting on this and realized that Jeff was very successful in music! just look at the mount of people he impacted! You know, if you are an artist and you impact ONE PERSON, you are successful. Jeff did far more than that though! My blog this Christmas, in light of this, is to say THANK YOU to the artists that I know and the ones that I don't. Without you, the world looks pretty drab! I could name a whole bunch of people here, but I don't have the space! The world to me, can be pretty backwards a lot of the time. We place borders to keep people in OR out. Rules to supposedly keep people safe. Some people get paid way too much and some not enough, but one thing is true. WE ARE ALL HUMAN. Respect to one another is deserved on that ONE aspect alone. Let's value our artists as much as our brain surgeon's. We are all on a journey. Jeff brought life to us through his music, so many artists just want to bring life and colour to the world. Please remember when you see an artist trying to make music, trying to improve their art form and trying to earn money to live from it. That SHOULD be respected. It takes guts to pursue something that so many try to discourage as not a viable avenue to make a living. You know, the real truth is that without music and the arts in general, as Winston Churchill said, when asked to cut funding to the arts, to ad money to the defence budget "then what are we fighting for"!   Have a Merry Christmas EVERYONE, put the focus on being thankful no matter what, there is where you will find happiness. RIP Jeff Tourette!

Jackson Reed-bridging it together

Well it’s my first blog post, not sure how to start this thing, so I’ll get right into it.

Back on Sunday, I did some maintenance on my “number 2” guitar, the stratocaster. It’s a cheap one and plays like it, but I think it’s still a quality guitar. It was also the very first electric guitar I owned so it’s special to me. But for years I neglected it a bit. The bridge pickup was getting pushed into the body of the guitar, and the bridge itself was a mess. The whammy bar (or tremolo arm if you prefer that) couldn’t fit in its hole properly anymore. So I opened up the guitar’s innards and adjusted the pickup, then proceeded to remove the bridge, putting in a new one. The returns are definitely great, it’s gonna need to be broken in. The sound is different, but I haven’t heard sound like that in a while, so I’m sure I can get used to the new tone. The new springs for the whammy system are very stiff, but they’ll definitely loosen over time. Overall, it feels good to have my old strat looking good again. After fixing that, I’ve turned my attention to making my first youtube video. It’ll be a cover of the song “Best of Both Worlds” by Van Halen, my favorite Van Halen song. I much prefer the Hagar era of Van Halen over Roth. 5150 and OU812 are two albums I am listening to nonstop right now, especially 5150. It is Van Halen’s best album musically and compositionally in my opinion. Best of Both Worlds is the track that never gets old for me off that album, and I can’t wait to release this video cover of it. When I eventually get a record deal, and go off to make my first hit album, you can bet Best of Both Worlds will be on that.

Simon-Invisible Reality

Hi again friends!

I’m glad you’re here reading my thoughts once again. I’m glad because there is a thought I’d really like to share with you. And that is what it is to be in our shoes… us, the people with bipolar.

Bipolarity is invisible. We can only see symptoms like depression or hypomania/mania to name only these. Otherwise, it’s an internal battle and too many of us suffer in silence. I associated myself with www.lequilibre.org and their main role is to break the isolation of people with a mood disorder in the Qu├ębec city region. Not being treated is one thing. But being treated and healthy, allows us to lead a normal life filled with all the joy and sadness life can give. In this video (https://youtu.be/v6QdOK5xzEk), I’m revealing some elements of bipolarity.  I hope you like it and I also hope you like this song I composed in a painful moment: https://youtu.be/SSkBJi6isE0

Thanks for being there.

Young Cap-Lift Your Head Up and Smile for Me

If you're feeling down....I want you to lift your head up and smile for me. I hope that by reading this I can give you some encouragement !!!! I know life is hard, and we all go through things we don't want to ..... Leaves us feeling as if maybe we did something wrong to deserve this, and nothing will ever change... that the cards dealt, were never in your favour. What if though....what if they were ? Not everyone is dealt the same cards, or is placed in the same situation. Sometimes it's on us to figure out how to play our cards, or play it cool, so they don't play your bluff. Regardless, you can do it !!! Sometimes to we feel we have to be alone to succeed, that it's either we do it by ourselves or we don't do it at all....Understandable since the world's got us so divided, most are to afraid to ask for help, and often when asking for help are judged for it !

So it makes it difficult to move forward. We got to break that awkwardness and work together if needed, we are all skilled in different ways, and maybe when you run out of cards in hand, and its down to your relied other, and your opponent, maybe they will have the cards in hand to overcome the situation, leaving you to start fresh with a new deck. Perspective is the biggest thing, never giving up, staying diligent, and not forgetting to work together to succeed, we are all going to go through things, but you got to keep your head up and keep moving. No matter What. Smile, your incredible. That's just it, you are, and you need to wake up every day and tell yourself this. Believe you can get through any situation your faced with !!!

At the end of the day, I know you can do this. Never Give up on yourself, you can defy the odds, you are meant to do more than just pay bills and go to work, when you wake up ! LIVE, don't just exist, feel every breath in your lungs, and know you are worth every minute, a BLESSING. Stay blessed, keep your head up, and smile :)  You got this !

Ian-This is your life

It's been a great month for me, and sometimes I just cant believe how quickly things can happen!

As you already know, I'm working away writing/recording, trying to get an album done for a January release... I talk about it every month... I don't typically do all of my writing at once. Instead, I do it throughout the year. It just works better for me to do that way because I invariably end up with time pressure in the weeks leading up to a release. So, this time I got a little further ahead and started recording earlier as well.

I wrote 'Your Hero' sometime in the spring I suppose, and recorded it in the spring as well, shot the video in the summer, and then mixed and mastered the song at the end of summer. It went to radio in Canada first, around September 15th, and then around the world a few weeks later.

Well, I'm happy to report that I received an email last week that I was on the Euro Indie Charts. I HAD to look of course, and there was my name, along with 'Your Hero' at position 95 on the charts. I was pretty stoked to say the least. This week I got another email saying I was on the charts, so I looked, and would you know I moved from 95, all the way up to 18! Very exciting stuff for me! I hope to continue this run of good luck for a while of course!!

At the same time that this is all going, I continue to write and record for my upcoming album. I had written a song called 'This is Your Life' and recorded it but decided that since Youtube is such a great platform for getting my music out, that I would put the song to a picture video for people to hear. You can hear the son in the video below:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM15l0dR8Qk&feature=youtu.be

MEET THE NEW LEADER IN INTERNATIONAL TOURING FOR ARTISTS!

Meet the new world Leader in international touring for artists. Some things NEVER change. It is important to be seen if you want to move forward. That is always the best remedy for being stale. Artists cannot afford to remain in one spot for long. They must be moving and creating connections, fans and new opportunities. There is still no better way to achieving everything you need, than touring. A lot of times, an artist needs to make headway in a country other than their own and then it leads to open doors in their homeland. This is why it is an important aspect of getting your music out there. Are you a "Facebook only" kind of artist ? Here is a link to see the kind of connections and experience that is behind this. Contact Stephen Wrench or Mark Rosner for more information. Everything you need in all aspects of support is there as well, but when it needs to START with a tour, call World Artist Tours!

Simon-Sting me

Why I Love Sting.

This guy is so creative!! And yet he’s traditional too. I remember The Police from when I was a kid and of course the most played radio song in history “Every Breath You Take”. Then still as a child came out “Nothing Like the Sun” with its jazz ambience. I’ve got great memories with friends and this album, as well as with “
Ten Summoner's Tales” with “Fields of Gold” and “Shape of my Heart”. This artist has always seemed to hit me at the right time, the right place and for the right reasons. And that’s exactly what happened in 1996… I was 20 years old and was entering adulthood with a BOOM and “Mercury Falling” was my soundtrack. The quality of the recordings, the sounds of the instruments, his voice and lyrics were all parts of what I couldn’t define. This album was officially a master piece in my book. Years passed and he released other albums. I wasn’t always on the lookout for his new recordings but Sting has always been a major influence for me.
More recently, in September of 2013, another major piece of work was released, “The Last Ship” The album tells the story of a ship yard in England where he grew up with his family. Again
, a complete album you want to pay attention to till the end.   What a nice spiritual surprise that came out at the right moment once again.

There is still room for creativity in this world. Art should be the witness of our growth as a species… not it’s downfall.
“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.”

Downie-Experience gives us wisdom

I hesitate to ever tell others what my songs mean.

I like that people can connect with my songs and find meaning in them for themselves. But, being that my music is also meant to convey my experience to help others, I also want them to get where I am coming from.

Based on the growing popularity of my recent single release ‘Unavailable’ and having just watched the movie Genius about the author Thomas Wolfe, this really hit home to me. "You have no idea of what I had to go through to get to where I am today - to look at you and feel nothing" ( from the movie Genius) Some of us do not recover quickly or easily when our heart is tossed aside by immaturity. "Pied Piper and Perter Pan" (Unavailable) However; it is this experience that gives us wisdom to know that when we love ourselves first we must be careful with whom we trust with our hearts. And when danger lurks we then step aside.

"I should've listened to my mother when she said "girl you better run". (from my song "Unavailable" ) There are some people who pull you in because it is the only way for them to feel good about themselves. Lacking their own self esteem they thrive on the energy and esteem of others. Once they have drained you they move on.

These are the people we love from a very safe distance!

TV AND FILM LICENSING OPPORTUNITY

Rosner Management Services is proud to announce the launch of "RMS Licensing and Publishing"  With years of experience in this area, Stephen Wrench of "Musik and Film",  one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd and one of the most respected music industry professionals in the world, will partner to deliver REAL Licensing opportunities by pitching to music supervisors on an on going basis. the company will focus on TV, Film, commercials, video games, retail stores and other licensing firms, to provide an on going push for your music. Mark Rosner explains the concept and what it means to the musicians of today. "I represent artists of all genres around the world. One thing most artists have in common is that they are busy. In fact, too busy AND lacking the knowledge of how to properly submit their music to music supervisors on a consistent basis. We have opportunities come across our desk quite frequently and always pass them onto our artists. However, for those artists that want to focus on "going after" opportunities aggressively, we can now offer them the guarantee that we are pursuing placements for them. In this world of music xray, song taxi, song catalogue, there are companies that will take $5-10 per submission and you rarely hear anything back, I wanted to be able to provide an environment for artists that they could have a proven industry team, pitching their music for placement opportunities, so they can focus on the many other aspects of their careers. You could never afford to hire someone to pitch only YOUR music every day. However, being a part of a company that has the ability to "target" the places that fit your music properly and has the connections to make it happen, is a great use of time and money. It is also priced very affordable, so it stands a good chance of achieving financial success as well. for information and a consultation, please send all inquiries to:

Symentha-Health, Music, Love

Health, Music and Love are my holy trinity of being.  Since I have found balance in this beautiful triad, my life has become a sweet song.

The more I have become at peace with my life and have merged so many valuable life lessons through my awakening journey, the more I see how sacred everything truly is.  From the darkness to the light, it is all divine.

Over the years as both my songs and myself evolve, my musical creations have become like  landmarks that let me know if I'm evolving.  No music, no movement.  That's my cue to check in and see where I've lost myself and forgotten the magic.  I'm a lover at heart so when songs are being birth'd through me, I know I'm tapped in to that special space of love's expansion through my own being.  It seems the more I awaken and deprogram from the sleeping slumber of my unconscious years, the more my music becomes like a master teacher that lets me know if I'm integrating my own consciousness or not.

Life is a game and music is the epic soundtrack that makes the journey a little sweeter.
